Documenting one woman’s journey on her first LSD trip no no no please no god no, nevermind i'm fine is a wild, high energy ride. Sole performer Sarina Freda plays herself telling her story about her first experience trying LSD. It all begins with a weekend away with her girlfriends and her crush. She feels pressured to try it but ignores her own feelings.
The show kicks off from here. Freda is an incredible performer: her use of clowning, movement and mine really compliments her storytelling. She is in full command of SpaceX’s spacious studio space, using the whole room to tell the story.
As she’s coming down from her high (or is she?) the darker themes of the play begin to unfold. Freda talks about her struggles with mental health, her strained relationships and compounding obligations. What’s really impressive about this play is that despite it’s surreal feel it is very relatable. As someone who has migrated to another country and doesn’t have the opportunity to see family as often, Freda’s guilt over not being there for her grandmother really struck a chord with me.
The lighting and sound design really support the story Freda is trying to tell. The bright colours and the constant movement onstage reflect outwardly her journey. The design really creates the world and atmosphere and helps bring the audience along for the ride.
This is a fantastic show, not to be missed!
